Select Turning Holders According to the Type of Processing

Turning tool holders play a key role in clamping the insert and transmitting forces to the cutting edge. Choosing the right holder for your specific operation—whether roughing, finishing, external, or internal turning—is essential for efficient machining.

Holders for Roughing and Finishing

Roughing operations demand robust holders and strong inserts with a large nose radius, such as CNMG or SNMG types. These holders offer rigidity to handle heavy material removal and vibrations.

Finishing operations require precision. Tool holders must ensure minimal runout and support fine-tipped inserts like VNMG or WNMG. This provides excellent surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

Selecting Holders by Cutting Direction

For external turning, straight-shank holders such as PCLNR or SCLCR are common. They allow efficient access to external surfaces of the workpiece.

For internal turning, slender and extended holders like S16Q-SCLCR are ideal. These holders are designed to reach into boreholes and often feature damping systems to reduce chatter.

Also consider tool approach direction: left-hand or right-hand holders must match your lathe setup and machining path.
